We have so much love for the Cleveland Metroparks; we can’t seem to stop talking about all our parks have to offer! Our 19th stop on our 40th anniversary tour of Cleveland is Quarry Rock.
Tucked in South Chagrin Reservation, Quarry Rock sits off of Solon Road within the village of Bentleyville, offering a picturesque view of the Aurora branch of the Chagrin River from its viewing deck. Like many parts of Northeast Ohio, Quarry Rock has a steep history rooted in its geology and natural resources and how the settlers of the time made a living from these resources.
In the 1800s, General James Griffith founded the small settlement of Griffithsburg (known today as Bentleyville/Chagrin Falls) in the area surrounding Quarry Rock, with a post office, sawmill, and the quarry. The town went into decline when the post office was moved to Solon in 1840, but the sandstone quarry and grindstone trade continued to thrive. In 1877, the railroad system built a spur line to more efficiently remove the sandstone. But in 1930 with the country heading into depression and the decline of local businesses, the quarry was repurposed as a part of the Cleveland Metroparks. Today, it serves a peaceful area for locals to enjoy.

Don’t forget a pair of water shoes or an old pair of sneakers on this adventure as well as an inner-tube!
