EA Guide Claudia Fulton is a wealth of knowledge on some of Northeast Ohio’s most interesting facts, news, culture, and lifestyle opportunities. She was part of an effort that established the Cleveland Lakefront Nature Preserve on the shore of Lake Erie. Below, you’ll find some details about the Cleveland Lakefront Nature Preserve from Claudia. For the birders out there, Claudia says this is the place to be!
“The Cleveland Lakefront Nature Preserve is a hidden gem for birders, photographers, walkers and anyone interested in a special piece of recent Cleveland history on the Lake Erie shoreline!
Located behind the Cleveland Metroparks Office at 8701 Lakeshore Boulevard is an 88-acre site that was created by 20 years of dredge material that came from dredging the channel of the Cuyahoga River. The Port Authority closed the site in 1999 and gradually nature took over the inadequate dredge material. Plants and animals started to inhabit the area. The area now has grasslands, meadows, walking trails and a beautiful “overlook” with benches that has one of the best views of the Cleveland skyline!
It has been designated an IBA (Important Bird Area for the layperson) by the Audubon Society because the site is an important resting place on the migration path of dozens of bird and butterfly species as they make their way north or south across Lake Erie. The Port Authority has a management plan of the area that will further support vegetation for more birds and butterflies.
A visit to the Nature Preserve is fun anytime of the year but if you go in May and September be sure to bring your binoculars and cameras for the thousands of birds making their migratory way north or south!”
