updated August, 2016..…After more than 35 years of creating first impressions of Cleveland & Akron for job candidates & transferring employees, we have good insights into which hotels show off our region best, based on client testimonials (almost 250 hotel room nights last year alone) and our own visits to these venues.
Although a mid-sized city, Cleveland has really invested in adding hotel rooms in its downtown (4,000 rooms in 2013 and 5,800 projected by 2016 years end).
This is by no means an all inclusive list of hotels in the region, but it is objective (no one paid to be a part of this list). So, whether the recommended hotel is in building that showcases our history, has superior services or simply is easily accessible to high traffic business areas, here are our picks:
Downtown Cleveland
Aloft Hotel – located in the Ernst & Young headquarters building on the east bank of the Flats – views of lake and river
Doubletree by Hilton – at E. 12th & Lakeside Avenue, walking distance to Convention Center and Rock Hall/Science Center
Drury Plaza Hotel – a 1920’s building that originally housed the Board of Education, this gorgeous building’s architecture & style has been compared to the Adolphus Hotel in Dallas. It is on the corner of E. 6th & St. Clair
Hilton Cleveland Downtown – opened in 2016, it’s the largest (600 rooms) hotel in Cleveland and is contemporary, cool and Bar 32 on top floor provides an amazing panoramic view of lake & downtown
Hyatt Regency – anchors the north end of the historic Old Arcade building (one of the first indoor shopping malls in US)
Kimpton Schofield Hotel – on the corner of E. 9th & Euclid-read more in this blog posting from our recen visit
Marriott at KeyTower – inside KeyCorp’s 60 story headquarters building on Public Square, central to most things in town
Metropolitan Hotel at the 9 – Euclid & E. 9th, 156 rooms, Marriott’s Autograph Collection, opened September 2014
Residence Inn – extended stay hotel inside the historic Colonial Arcade on Prospect & E. 4th Street
Renaissance Cleveland Hotel – anchor hotel inside Terminal Tower, connects via train to airport
Ritz Carlton – the other anchor hotel inside Terminal Tower, connects via train to airport
Westin Hotel – opened in spring 2014, it is just a block from the Convention Center & Medical Mart
Wyndham Hotel – only hotel in the theater district, just 13 blocks east of Public Square on Euclid Avenue
University Circle area (close to major museums, orchestra’s concert hall, Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals and CWRU)
Courtyard by Marriott – located on the campus of University Hospitals and CWRU
Doubletree Tudor Arms Hotel – on Carnegie Avenue just minutes from University Circle or up into the Heights neighborhood
InterContinental Hotel & Conference Center – located on the campus of the Cleveland Clinic
Glidden House – boutique hotel in the former Glidden paint family’s mansion
Washington Place Inn- in Little Italy, but walkable to museums and hospitals, just 7 guest rooms in this historic mansion
Eastside of Cuyahoga County
Aloft Hotel, Beachwood – near I-271 and Richmond Roads, next to Eaton Corp’s new headquarters
Cleveland Marriott East – although technically in Warrensville Heights, it abuts Beachwood, close to many corporate headquarters
Embassy Suites, Beachwood – close to 271/Chagrin business corridor, has pool and suites for people visiting with children
Marriott AC – Pepper Pike (in Pinecrest development) – UNDER CONSTRUCTION to open in 2017
Hyatt Place – Lyndhurst – UNDER CONSTRUCTION, 135 room new Hyatt will be added to the Legacy Village shopping district on the corner of Cedar & Richmond on the border of Beachwood & Lyndhurst with an opening date scheduled for early summer 2016
Hotel Indigo – Beachwood, on Park East Drive, a boutique hotel chain by InterContinental (pet friendly)
Inn of Chagrin Falls – nestled in Chagrin Falls, this boutique hotel is 35 min. east of Cleveland but walkable to the charming restaurants and stores in downtown Chagrin Falls, more B&B than hotel
Westside of Cuyahoga County
Cambria Hotel & Suites, Avon – a little more than 100 rooms on Detroit Road
Holiday Inn, Westlake – just off of I-90 and quick access to nearby Crocker Park lifestyle center
Hyatt Place – Westlake, opened in 2015 in the Crocker Park lifestyle center
Homewood Suites – Sheffield Village, opened in the summer of 2015
Southside of Cuyahoga County
Embassy Suites, Indepdenence – centrally located, 10 minutes south of downtown Cleveland
Akron/Canton area hotels
Hilton Fairlawn – just north of Akron in the Fairlawn area
Sheraton Suites in Cuyahoga Falls – beautiful setting overlooking falls/gorge in the Cuyahoga River, off Rt. 8 near the Ohio Turnpike
Villas at Gervasi Winery – built to blend into a Tuscan countryside, this magnificent property with a restaurant, gift shop and winery also has beautiful guest rooms with fireplaces and impeccable decor and appointments
Bertram Inn at Glenmoor Country Club – 1930’s Gothic style building on the grounds of a Jack Nicklaus golf course
On the outskirts (hotels that are near attractions, out in the country or for one tank trip overnight stays)
Bertram Inn & Conference Center – located in Aurora, high end, great spa services and restaurant, pampering – great place to celebrate an anniversary
Kalahari Resort – near Cedar Point amusement park, and more importantly, is also a water park to scare away the winter blahs
Hotel Breakers – in the Cedar Point park, with a private beach and marina access, on Lake Erie
