We’re already halfway through our list of 40 of our favorite places! Next up: the Holden Arboretum.
The Holden Arboretum is the twelfth largest public garden in the country, and we have it all to ourselves in Cleveland (about 30 minutes from downtown).
Quick Stats on the Holden Arboretum
- 3,500 acres total
- 200 acres of special and cultivated gardens
- Open 361 days a year
- About 15,000 member households
- Over 350,000 attendees annually
A wonderful place to explore each season, the Holden Arboretum has classes, events, lectures, guided tram tours, and self-guided walks.
The Kalberer Family Emergent Tower, which is 220 feet up (AKA higher than the trees) offers stunning views. Heads up: the Tower sways the higher you ascend, so it’s not the best for those with acrophobia. The Murch Canopy Walk has three connected walkways and is 65 feet high in the forest. Both sites are open April 1 through November 1, so make sure you catch them when you can!
The trails are meticulously maintained, making the rest of the Arboretum a delight to walk through: landscaped gardens, ponds, a butterfly garden…it’s a peaceful way to spend a day outside. You’re allowed to bring packed lunches if you and your family want to have a picnic near their visitor center.
And don’t worry too much as winter approaches; there are still plenty of activities to enjoy at Holden Arboretum once the snow starts to fall. From winter hikes to snowshoeing to cross country skiing, there are cool activities available all year round. What’s not to love?
