When most people think of movie filming locations, they think of LA or NYC. While Ohio isn’t your typical movie set location, there are still a bunch of talented filmmakers located here, and plenty of movies shot in our own backyard. We have the A Christmas Story house right in Tremont. The Avengers made big waves in Cleveland. More recently, The Bachelor filmed an episode downtown. Northeast Ohio has made its way into cinematic hearts, and last year was no exception.
Cherry
The Marvel Universe is no stranger to Cleveland. Spider-Man 3 and Captain America: The Winter Soldier have scenes shot in Cleveland in addition to The Avengers. And now, an upcoming Marvel crime drama, Cherry, filmed here. The Russo brothers – Anthony and Joe – are responsible. We love when native Clevelanders visit, especially when they visit close to our office in Cleveland Heights. They were shooting just around the corner on Coventry Rd.
I See You
Although it was filmed in Cleveland in 2018, I See You starring Helen Hunt came out in theaters last month. Matt Waldeck, the producer of the movie, grew up in Bainbridge. He recently moved back to Cleveland to start a production company – Zodiac Features. This was their first film! We have existing resources for filmmakers such as the Greater Cleveland Film Commission, Greater Cleveland Urban Film Festival, Cleveland International Film Festival (CIFF), and the Chagrin Documentary Film Fest. We’re excited to add another film production company to the mix!
The Minuteman
Liam Neeson’s latest film shot around Parma, Old Brooklyn, and other Northeast Ohio areas. The Minuteman, a film about an unlikely pairing running from cartel assassins, is currently in post-production. We’re looking forward to seeing it in theaters!
Queen & Slim
Another film that was recently released was Queen & Slim. This Daniel Kaluuya film came out in November last year and shot in Cleveland during the polar vortex earlier in 2019. It’s still out in some theaters, so make sure you catch it! Another film starring Daniel Kaluuya filmed in Mansfield last month. Although it’s currently untitled, the film delves into the story of Fred Hampton, a Black Panther member who was slain by Chicago police at 21; the movie is directed by Shaka King.
Other Films
The widely covered Native Son, based on the 1940 novel, is set in Chicago, but much of the filming was done in Cleveland. The movie premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this year, and also on HBO. We had Them That Follow at CIFF starring Academy Award winner Olivia Colman plus a slew of other movies filmed or released this year. A few of those were: Women of a Certain Age, On the Arm, and Run.
We already have some films lined up for the Northeast Ohio area this year, too. Most notably, Copley Road – a horror anthology series – will be shot in Akron.
