EA University, our quarterly listen & learn outing to insure our Guides have the latest info about our region was hosted by Dan Simon, who wears many hats at University Hospitals including: President, Academic & External Affairs and Chief Scientific Officer, Ernie and Patti Novak Distinguished Chair in Health Care Leadership, Professor of Medicine and Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and President, Academic & External Affairs and Chief Scientific Officer.
UH has partnered with EA for years to woo and onboard out-of-town medical professionals and health care administrators to their hospital system, so Dan invested an hour of his time over lunch to share an update on UH and the unique assets it offers our region.

Some interesting things we learned:
- Case Comprehensive Cancer Center – NIH’s National Cancer Institute designates partners in cancer research and care and in Cleveland that alliance is the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCCC), which leverages the strengths of UH’s Seidman Cancer Center, CWRU School of Medicine and the Cleveland Clinic’s Tausig Cancer Center to lead research efforts on preventing and treating cancer with leading edge drug-, radiation- and cell-based therapies for thousands of cancer patients in NE Ohio
- 2026 will bring a groundbreaking for UH’s new conference center on Euclid Avenue (currently green space just west of UH Drive, the main entrance to Lerner Tower); the City of Cleveland has approved plans for the new Iris & Bert Wolstein Center, a 40,000SF building that will include a conference center, new patient education facilities, a medical simulation center, public art galleries and an outdoor sculpture garden as well as a two story ballroom and cafe
- UH Cleveland Medical Center was ranked eighth in the U.S. and 16th globally in a survey of the strongest Academic Medical Center brands, according to Brand Finance, a London-based brand valuation consultancy
- Harrington Discovery Institute – the #1 academic drug discovery program in the US which funds researchers in US, Canada and the UK; over a billion dollars has been dedicated to identifying, testing and bringing new drugs to the market; 23 experimental drugs are currently in Phase 1-3 clinical trials and offers UH the opportunity to create a sustainable model with licensing agreements with pharma and biotech
- UH joined forces with the University of Oxford, consistently ranked as the #1 university in the world to create the Oxford-Harrington Rare Disease Centre & Accelerator which provides pharma experts mentors and milestone-based funding to researchers who are working to create new drugs for rare diseases; a rare disease is one that affects less than 200,000 people in the US, but in total, some 500 million people worldwide suffer from these diseases, many of them children
- Concierge medicine continues to gain popularity and is serviced by both UH Select, Executive Health programs; but UH continues to focus on creating access to doctors and appointments in a timely manner for all its patients.

Every client has a unique story and we always make an effort to get to know their priorities, challenges and opportunities which is especially important with a new year right around the corner.
